Memories from 2011

Another year has ridden on by and brought with it tons of new faces, happy memories and future fun. We are happy to be adding new motorcyclists on a daily basis to keep our motorcycle community growing and vibrant. Also equally important are the lifelong riders who have logged thousands if not hundreds of thousands of miles on roads of all kinds.

We are from all walks of life and we all have this thing in common called The Love of the Ride. Regardless of what type of bike you are on, when you pass another rider, throw out the biker wave. Because you are both out enjoying the same thing and that is worth the acknowledgment.

Lets take a look back over 2011 and see what we find.

Remember last January and our record snow fall? The year didnt get off on a great start for many people who had snow damage. But we still consider ourselves very lucky. And look at our mild winter we are having now, people have been riding everyday!

Had to bid farewell and good luck to a few good WOW people who moved onto other states in search of new motorcycle adventures.

We had a wonderful year full of seminars and a great competition for perfect attendance by a handful of customers.

2011 started our Eaglerider Rentals program. This has brought us so many people from all over the country and the world. It has been an honor to be able to facilitate so many dreams that people have of riding with family and friends.

Another bike with no excuses. We met several people in 2011 taking journeys around the world on motorcycles. This one belongs to a Belgian guy who was making his way around the world on this bike. Makes the morning commute to work seem insignificant doesnt it?

A couple from Alpharetta took the GlobeBusters tour on a pair of Vstrom 650s. At the end of the trip, its hard to say who fared better, the bikes or the riders!!

Woke everyone up real early to come learn about the new Zero electric motorcycles we brought into WOW in September.

Our Zero demo days have been popular and let people get to feel the electric experience.

40,000 people gathered at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham Alabama for the Vintage Festival and Races. Look for an invitation from WOW this year to ride to the museum and check things out.

Start them early and let them have fun riding.

Our 20th Anniversary Open House was a wonderful day filled with good times and fun. It was one of the most memorable days of the year for us and we want to still thank everyone who came out that day.

Big crowds to watch the great Stunt Show by Anger Management.

Certain people stand out throughout the year as just great all around people. Ken and JoAnna Murray have been guest speakers for the past few years now about improving riding skills and also integrating handgun instruction among other things into their business to help diversify their customer base but also bring it all back around to motorcycling.

We thank all the great people we have met over the years that keep our business going and we look forward to meeting many more in 2012.

Though it’s not exactly Best in Show around here, we are dog people at Icon. A 4 legged companion never begrudges spending the family budget on shiny pistons, rusted CraigsList finds, or short lived race rubber. He doesn’t mind eating chinese dog food for another month. He lies by your side when the asphalt snake bites you to the couch for a week. When the ‘ol lady is on your case for having different ‘goals’, it’s a comfort when the pup comes over and gives you a lick – saying, your goals are cool with me dad, live the dream. It’s easy to prove that a dog is man’s best friend, but they’ve also been known to literally crap all over our office, bite scoe’s belly fat, or bring buckets of dirt into the living room. For this we forgive them, and as they continue crunching melamine nuggets and distracting our wives, we promise to do better next time at Petsmart and go for a walk outside the oily garage this weekend.

This past Saturday was full of excitement and brought one of the largest crowds WOW has ever seen. We celebrated our 20th anniversary with as many as possible. Our ZERO motorcycles tent gave free demo rides throughout the day to give people the chance to experience the new electric bikes that we carry. We turned our showroom floor into madness with balloons and live entertainment by the Stooge Brothers band. The parts/accessories department was swarming with people ready to win the raffle drawings we had set up, proceeds going to local charities. The talk of the day was the performances by Anger Management stunt team that "wow'ed" us with 3 amazing shows. Of course all of this wouldn't mean anything without our wonderful volunteers and customers so thank you for the many years of love and support. We hope you had great time with us and we're looking forward to the next 20!

We had the good fortune to be able to take two of the Zero electric motorcycles down to CBS in Atlanta and let the morning news team take a spin. Watching Justin (weather) riding in circles around the studio while the cameras rolled was worth getting up at 4am.

European Bike Week Faaker See Austria

The 2011 European Bike Week was as diverse as the whole European Union. People from many different countries all over the world made the trek to join the party, be the party or just watch the party. Harleys are the dominate bike in the crowd because after all, it is sponsered by the big HD company itself. But added into the Harley mix you see every different type of rider and bike.

What is truly amazing to see is the amount of American patriotism that is shown in a country so far away with really no Americans there. It is a wonderful reminder of how our country continues to be a dream to so many.

Funniness and naughtiness abounds through most bike festivals, but the Europeans always have their special flair, especially...The Italians!

Beautiful bikes, normal bikes and downright ugly bikes were all interesting to look at while walking around beautiful Lake Faak. If you ever get the chance to go see this for yourself, grab the throttle and ride!

The Last Hurrah....

This particular post is almost a personal one. Many of us here at WOW have been in the motorcycle business for decades and we have met all kinds of people from all kinds of places. And once you have been around awhile some of those people, well, pass on. Stark reality of life really. But we tend to hear about it a little more often in this business so after awhile you just get used to it and it is not as shocking. So when we first had a phone call from two brothers that wanted to rent a couple of bikes to go riding because one of them had stage four cancer, we thought, "well, are you sure about that?"
We meet Timothy and Scott Halleran for all of about an hour and a half while they were here picking their rental Goldwing and ST1300 to go ride in the mountains together. But during that time Timothy couldnt stop talking about their plans for riding. How excited he was to be able to have made it this far and he was thinking of this as "His last Hooorah"(ex-marine) with his brother and good friend. You hear alot of people say " Before I die..I want to....." And generally they mean some time in the future and they hope they are talking about years. When Tim said that he thought he was talking about months. He looked well enough. Big tall strong looking guy who kept joking the whole time he was here at WOW. We waved them off and sent them up to the mountains for their last ride together and Tim's Last Hoorah.
We write about this because we always hear people talking about the bucket list, or the one day list or the when I have the money list. But rarely do we meet the people crossing off the list.
Meeting Tim gave "The List" a whole new meaning to some of us around here and we wanted to share that with anyone who was interested.
As you can probably tell, Tim isnt with us anymore. He fell ill while on the trip and had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital and eventually transferred back down to Florida where he lived. While Tim was in the hospital in the mountains, he refused to ruin the trip for his brother and friend, insisting that they go ride for him and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Tim was an interesting fellow and we appreciated the opportunity to have him breeze through WOW and make us remember why we got into this business in the first place. For the love of the ride.

There is always an excuse to not ride. Tim reminded us of the good reason to ride.

LAFAYETTE, NY (WSYR-TV) – New York State Troopers say one man is dead after a motorcycle crash near McClary Road and Route 11 in LaFayette on Saturday.

New York State Police say 55-year-old Philip Contos of Parish was part of a protest against motorcycle helmets.

Police say several motorists from the group ABATE (American Bikers Aimed for Education) of Onondaga County had come together to make a point that they didn't need their helmets.

The group was driving south on Route 11 in Lafayette around 1:30 p.m., headed toward Lake Como, just south of the Finger Lakes.

Police say Contos suddenly hit the brakes and lost control of the motorcycle.

According to troopers, Contos was thrown over his handlebars and hit the pavement as his 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle skidded toward the guardrail.

Contos was still alive when crews arrived at the scene and was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, Contos was not wearing his helmet, as required by law. Witnesses say this decision was part of the protest.

Police say that based on evidence at the scene and from doctors, Contos would have survived if he had been wearing a DOT-approved helmet.

"The medical expert we discussed the case with who pronounced him deceased stated that he would've no doubt survived the accident had he been wearing a helmet," said Trooper Jack Keller.

Police are still investigating why Contos suddenly hit the brakes.

No other motorcycles were involved in the crash. Friends and members of the bike group put their helmets back on as they left the scene.

ABATE told NewsChannel 9 that they believe in freedom of choice and bikers know the risk when they ride without a helmet.

The Syracuse Chapter of ABATE President Christinea Rathbun has been riding motorcycles for 20 years and is on the front lines of protests to reform helmet laws. While her passion is not shaken, news of a comrade's death is disheartening.

"ABATE is very saddened and still shocked about the fact that we've lost another rider in Philip and that our hearts go out to him and our prayers as well," said Rathbun.

Police say ABATE was issued a permit to let members ride without helmets for a parade in Syracuse. The accident was in Lafayette and it was not considered a parade. That's a point police will be investigating.

Despite the doctors claim that a helmet would have saved Phillip Contos, Rathbun's views are unchanged. She said riders know the risks and will continue to fight for the right to choose how they ride.

"Obviously if he was out there today, he was protesting for his right of freedom to be able to wear a helmet or not wear a helmet. This is the 11th year. There has never been an incident until today," said Rathbun.

ABATE riders tell us they don't think Contos was a member of their group.

Police want to remind riders that many novelty helmets are not legal.

You can check with the department of transportation to make sure your helmet has been approved.

There was rain on most of our parades on the Fourth, but that still didn't stop the fun. Riding can still be enjoyable year round if you dress for the ride. Even when it is hot you need to wear your gear. Nothing feels worse than road rash except getting road rash straight on your skin when the asphalt is reaching 120 degrees.We like your skin just the way it is!

Keep your bike from overheating and consider changing from coolant to Engine Ice. Talk to the Service Department for more details.

Caffeine and Octane was created several years ago after a similar car show in Roswell, GA shut down. The show’s founders, Mark and Frank, were having coffee at Panera Bread in The Avenue East Cobb one Saturday morning and decided The Avenue would be a great location for a Saturday morning show.

Modeled after a well-known California show, the car show would be appropriately informal, with an automotively non-denominational approach, and without judgment. The founders desired a show that would display cars that were both new and old, foreign and domestic, bone stock and wildly modified all together in the same lot. The owners would be able to enjoy a cup of coffee or two, all the while, admiring each other’s rides. Additionally, the show would be open for spectators of all ages to appreciate various different genres and models of automobiles.

Riders asked to oppose Georgia motorcycle-only checkpoints

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is urging riders nationwide to contact Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to urge him to stop the Georgia State Patrol from conducting any motorcycle-only traffic checkpoints.

Tens of thousands of motorcyclists from around the nation could be subject to Georgia motorcycle-only checkpoints if those checkpoints are in place before, during and after Daytona (Fla.) Bike Week, which runs March 4-13.

Ed Moreland, AMA senior vice president for government affairs, suggests that riders contact the governor through the AMA website at http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/issueslegislation and ask that any motorcycle-only checkpoints be suspended until key questions are answered. Those questions, which have been posed by the AMA to Deal and other officials, include: How do motorcycle-only checkpoints increase the safety of motorcyclists? Where do states draw their authority to conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints? Is "probable cause" required to stop a motorcycle and, if so, what constitutes probable cause?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave Georgia a $70,000 grant to conduct one or more roadside motorcycle-only checkpoints. New York state has operated a similar program. The AMA has been tracking this disturbing development of motorcycle-only checkpoints since it first appeared in New York several years ago.

"The AMA believes that the primary source of motorcycle safety is in motorcycle crash prevention and not in arbitrarily pulling over riders and randomly subjecting them to roadside inspections," Moreland said.

"The NHTSA should focus on decreasing the likelihood of crashes from occurring in the first place," Moreland said. "No public money should be applied to promoting such a program without first addressing questions from the motorcycling community," he said.

In addition to letters submitted to the past and present governors of Georgia, the AMA has questioned the potential discriminatory and legal nature of this program and submitted a list of questions for clarification to the New York State Police concerning that agency's program.

The AMA also sent a letter to NHTSA Administrator David Strickland urging him to suspend the grant program that gives states money for motorcycle-only checkpoints until questions have been addressed. The Diavel uses black-bodied 50mm Marzocchi front forks. These forks are fully adjustable for spring pre-load, compression and rebound damping.

The forks are gripped by a slash-cut triple-clamp - cast aluminium for the lower and forged for the upper - with a rubber-mounted riser to tapered alloy bars.

At the rear the Ducati Diavel employs a Sachs rear suspension unit slung low under the chassis in a horizontal position, operated by a progressive pull-rod linkage from the swingarm. Adjustable in compression and rebound damping, the unit uses a handy control for easy spring pre-load adjustment.
